First Virginia

Regiment

Dedicated to inspiring patriotism and educating the public through the authentic portrayal of the soldiers and civilians of the Continental Army.

American Revolution

The First Virginia Regiment is a Revolutionary War battle reenactment and living history organization. We portray Continental Army troops from the State of Virginia from 1775 through 1783. The group portrays a company of soldiers with muskets, a cannon artillery crew, as well as the civilians who follow the Army.

About the Regiment

Honoring Those Who

Forged a Nation

The First Virginia Regiment is a nonprofit living history organization dedicated to bringing the American Revolution to life. As a founding member of the Continental Line, we recreate the experiences of the soldiers, camp followers, and civilians who supported George Washington’s Continental Army from 1775 through 1783.

We wear period-correct uniforms, use reproduction weapons and equipment, and perform General von Steuben’s drill to educate the public on the sacrifices made for American Independence.

Whether we are at Mount Vernon or Valley Forge, our goal remains the same: to rekindle the flames of patriotism and honor the men, women, and families who wholly dedicated themselves to the cause of freedom.

The First Virginia Regiment is more than just a military unit; we are a living history community. Our members recreate the full spectrum of military camp life during the War, bringing history to life through several dedicated roles:

  • The Musket Company: The backbone of the army, trained in the drill and discipline of the Continental line.

  • Artillery Crew: Mastering the mechanics and teamwork required to operate the field pieces that defined Revolutionary War battles.

  • Musick: Fifers and drummers providing the essential signals, music, and morale for the military camp and the field.

  • Camp Followers & Civilians: The women and children who followed their husbands and fathers, as well as many other civilians who provided indispensable backbone support for the army as nurses, laundresses, sutlers, and more.
